Description
For Christians, the Easter egg symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus Christ and dyeing eggs is a beloved tradition in the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches. Eggs are usually dyed red on Holy Thursday to represent the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the cross. For the entertainment of specially young children many colors, designs and decorations were introduced, but red is the most common.
In the Greek tradition, a red egg is placed on the Easter bread, the tsoureki, as an Easter decoration that distinguishes the Easter from the everyday tsoureki.
Greeks also compete in a fierce egg-tapping dual, a fun crack game taking place only during Easter Sunday. The words, "Christos anesti!" ("Christ has risen!") are uttered by the person cracking their egg upon the other's, who responds, "Alithos anesti!" ("Indeed he has!"). The same process is repeated when the other person cracks the other side of their egg to the first person's other side egg.
